RICOCHET - info 2022
Shipp’s Ricochet series embodies the artist's preoccupation with building analogue worlds in order to capture the essence of an object on camera. To create these works, Shipp rescues discarded basketballs and painstakingly builds a set in his studio reminiscent of late 20th century gymnasiums. In a process that can take days, the artist manipulates light and texture until the camera captures exactly how Shipp wants to portray his subject. What appears to be a digitally rendered image of a ball caught in motion, is in fact a meticulously crafted mise-en-scene designed to confuse and delight the viewer.
For Shipp, each ball has a personality and a history. Their stories of struggle and triumph are universal stories of the human condition and our yearning to survive, no matter the odds.
